The End of Cartoon Network

HBO is apparently about dropping Cartoon Network from streaming because it is now costing them money. Sadly this was a long time coming.

I was thankfuly born soon enugh to see the end of CN's second "golden age" in the 2000s and enjoy all their older shows on Boomerang, but sadly born late enough to watch CN's programming go to shit. Teen Titans, Pokemon, and a few other good ones were on the main CN channel. I remember always wanting to watch Adventure Time, but it was never on when I got to see it. My parents back then had only antenna tv, so until we got cable/satelite (and then after mom canceled that), we did have Cubo and WOSU/PBS Kids, but I had to go to my grandparents to watch CN, Boomerang, Nick, and the Hub Network (Discovery Kids). I actually didn't mind the live action shows, which most people say are what started CN's downfall. But while I didn't get to see much to the live action stuff, and yeah a channel like Cartoon Network might not be their place, I think they would have been cool.

And in the 2010s there were plenty of cool shows. Adventure Time, Regular Show, Lego Ninjago, Gumball, and some others. But there were some shit ones, too. I kind of liked Steven Universe at first, but I hated how all the Gems were girls. Some of them I hoped were boys, like Ruby and I think Jasper, but no they were confirmed to be chicks. Talk about diversity. And then there were the scenes were they had to dance suggestively for some reason befor fusing together... yeah. That was SUPER uncomfortable to watch --- and back then mature jokes and sexual inuendoes went over my head! Anytime something sexual was said on TV, I was confused enough that I had to ask my mom what it ment, and even back then I knew this show was sexual! Now, I am by no means a prude, and I tried to deny what I was seeing, but it was too obvious. So yeah, Steven Universe sucked. Not that I watched much of it. I think the show's concept was cool, but it should have also had a less cartoony (beanhead) and more "realistic" style to fit its story. I think something like the Teen Titans style.

Then there was Uncle Grandpa, probably the worst show on Cartoon Network. If a guy existed irl like Uncle Grandpa he would be mentally retarded and/or a kiddy toucher, I'm sorry. I do not see how someone like him could NOT be seen as that. I hated that show. Same with Clarence. I thought Clarence was stupid. I hated some of the characters' designs. But I guess I have to give that show a pass becus Clarence was a kid and so he wouldn't know better the way an older like UG should.

And of course, the bane of any Cartoon Network adult's existence: Teen Titans Go! I didn't mind this show at first, but the more it went on, the stupider it got. I hated that show so much. I hated all the Titans. Robin was a toxic narcissistic leader, Starfire was stupidly innocent (I know in the original she was naive and that's fine, I get it, she was from a different planet, but in the reboot it was just dumb), all Beastboy cared about was food and lusting after Raven, Cyborg also only cared about food and slacking off, Raven was a stuckup bitch, and no one respected their leader or took their job as super heroes seriously. The episodes relied on bullshit conflicts and childish humor. AND THIS WAS THE SHOW THAT CARTOON NETWORK DECIDED SHOULD MAKE UP 90% OF THEIR RUN TIME!!!

And then I went back to CN some years ago (though only because they were airing two episodes of o.g. TT every day), many of the shows the have now are so dumb. Even Gumball, which I absolutely loved, got old. The jokes got stupider as the series went on, and all I ever got to see were reruns. I never got to see the very last episodes, like the one with that irl guy. And looking through the Nick channels and Disney XD, a lot of the new shows are fucking stupid, so you could argue that it's just my maturing brain not putting up with childishness, and that might be part of it, but CN used to have mature shows. Like Teen Titans. Or Adventure Time. Those shows were very emotionally mature. They were cartoony enough for kids to enjoy, but still so emotionaly mature that they wouldn't be able to fully appreciate the story for another 10 years. There is no reason to only give kids dumbed-down reboots like Teen Titans Go! or Thundercats Roar or Powerpuff Girls.

So yeah. Those shows were stupid. I once tried to turn to Boomerang for the classic shows, but of course, being the graveyard of Cartoon Network, it was taken over with Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry reboots, Uncle Grandpa, and other garbage shows. I'll link to the video where I got the news from. THe comments talk about all the dumbass decisions made by the network. I just wanted to rant about witnessing their downfall. I honestly think kids deserve better shows than what they're getting today. Not all shows have to have adolesent themes or emotional maturity that will go over a 9-year-old's head, but they don't all have to be so...imature...either.

And rest in peace to Adult Swim as well. I should have watched King of the Hill when I had the chance. Same with some other shows. I tried to record Toonami shows like Naruto: Shippuden and Dragon Z Kai. But they were hard to watch because they kept getting deleted, or I couldn't watch them when my dad was around (he didn't like any of the shows I wanted to watch). I really liked Shen Mu: the Animation, but I lost track half-way through the first season. And I haven't seen season 3 of Smiling Friends. As Squidbillies was kind of cool. They should have just canceled it after season 12 instead of keeping it alive just to give it a conclusion in 13.
